Fancy Shaped Diamonds

Diamonds are available in a number of shapes with each shape being quite different from the others. Therefore, in order to determine the quality of the diamond in each shape, some of the unique characteristics need to be observed and analyzed. The four popular shapes are – Round, Princess, Emerald and Cushion.

The round cut diamond is by far the most popular diamond shape available today, accounting for approximately 75% of all diamonds sold. A round diamond is known to provide more flexibility in terms of balancing cut, color, and clarity grades while achieving the visual design and style to wish for. It is also considered superior to many fancy shapes at the proper reflection of light, which in turn, maximizes the diamond’s potential brightness.

Right behind round cut, the princess cut is the second most popular diamond shape for engagement rings. With its pointed corners and traditionally square shape, the princess cut offers a high visual appeal and unique cut that many people love. So while it's a popular choice for princess cut engagement rings, it's also flexible enough to be used in almost any ring style.

The cushion cut has a square or rectangular outline with rounded corners. While the preferred shape has a 1:1 ratio, we most often see it in a slightly elongated shape. This classic cut has been around for almost 200 years, and for the first century of its existence, it was the most popular diamond shape (similar to the round cut today). Until the early 20th century, the cushion cut diamond was the de facto diamond shape, and is still extremely popular as it has better ‘fire’ than the other diamonds.

The emerald-cut is a classic diamond shape that is usually rectangular. It has clean lines created by parallel facets, and its corners are always cut with a blocked shape. Emerald cut diamonds differ from brilliant-cut diamonds in their light reflection characteristics. Rather than showcasing a brilliant sparkle, they produce a striking interplay of light and dark planes, resembling the visual effect of a hall of mirrors. While less fiery, the long lines and dramatic flashes of light give the emerald cut an elegant appeal.
